Inspire was commissioned by the University of Missouri Percussion Ensemble for a masterclass and concert during a residency with So Percussion. As a composer and performer I was a huge fan of So Percussion and honored to be able to write a piece to be premiered in front of them, and I was inspired by the music of So Percussion in composing this piece.
 
Inspire is about how one little idea, one meaningless event or just a single note can inspire something much larger. The piece starts off with a simple half note C repeated over and over. The other motives are built out of, and seem to interact with, the simple half note C. Although the piece is completely composed, the piece is intended to sound like a conversation between the instruments as if they were being inspired by each other on the spot.
 
The piece was composed in a time in my career where I was struggling to find my meaning in music. I think it is important for every musician to be inspired by other musicians and to get to feel the interaction from player to player. This is the feeling I was trying to capture with Inspire.
